Paengaroa Mainland Island is home to some of New Zealand's rarest plant species. It also features divaricating plants - strange botanical ugly ducklings.

Paengaroa is a special place for plants. Here you'll find many rare species and more divaricating plants (strange botanical ugly ducklings) than in any similarly sized area in New Zealand.

Paengaroa straddles the Hautapu River near the village of Mataroa, northwest of Taihape in Wanganui.

Covering 107ha, and incorporating another 13ha of Railcorp land, this scenic reserve was made a mainland island in 1990.
